Our member, Auke Pols, published an opinion piece in Dutch newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad (of Tuesday, 17 February): ‘In wereld met absolute schaarste gaat groei uiteindelijk altijd ten koste van een ander.’ (In a world with absolute scarcity, growth will in the end always occur at the expense of someone else.)
The FD currently hosts a timely debate on how the Netherlands can best generate economic growth. Auke Pols argues that the more important question is whether we should go for more economic growth, as our growth policy has led to massive environmental problems and social inequality. He argues that a zero-growth policy aimed at a better quality of life is possible and feasible and should be seriously considered in the debate.
