Colloquium: What kind of freedoms are capabilities?

Are capabilities best understood as freedoms? The answer needs to be contextual: if the context makes it likely that the use of the term freedom will make the argument/analysis be misunderstood, then I’d suggest to define, describe and illustrate “capabilities” and introduce that word. Yet for moral philosophers and political theorists eager to further develop the capability approach into a coherent political theory, a clear understanding of capabilities as option freedoms may pave the way for much-needed philosophical work that lies ahead.
