Postdoc Researcher and PhD Position
The Postdoc Researcher and PhD candidate will conduct a constructive, ethical technology assessment to investigate the design and use practices of telemonitoring devices for chronic patients. Based on these insights they are expected to develop tools that can support engineers to find a balance between surveillance by technological devices and control and autonomy of patients and nurses. The research is a collaborative project between social scientists, philosophers, and engineers.

The PhD candidate will conduct a study of the design practices of telemonitoring technologies currently developed and implemented in health care in Europe. In your research you will employ and further develop theoretical perspectives of sociology and philosophy of technology concerning the co-construction of users, technologies and norms of care.
You have a master degree in one of the social sciences (technology and culture; philosophy of technology; sociology; or media studies) and affinity with societal problems related to the introduction of ICT in healthcare. You are motivated and able to work independently as well as in collaborative projects.
We offer a very challenging position in an inspiring environment. As a PhD candidate you will be appointed in a full-time position for a period of four years, at the end of which you must have completed your PhD thesis. The gross monthly salary for a PhD increases from ? 2042 in the first year to ? 2612 in the final year (in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). (Department of Philosophy, fulltime)
You will conduct a study of the impact of telemonitoring technologies in the use practices of patients and health-care professionals. In your research you will further develop the approach of technological mediation analysis, as it was developed in philosophy of technology, in a normative direction. Moreover, you will integrate this approach in existing methodologies of technology assessment and in the ethics of technology use and design.
You have a PhD degree in philosophy or science and technology studies, and a strong interest in analyzing the social and cultural roles of technology at the intersections between both fields. Moreover, you are motivated to combine conceptual work with empirically informed approaches, and to contribute to the development of new forms of normative reflection on technology design and use. You are motivated and able to work independently as well as in collaborative projects.
We offer you an full-time appointment as a Postdoc Researcher for a period of 3 years. The gross salary will amount maximally ? 4.374,00 per month (in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). In addition, the University of Twente offers additional attractive employment conditions.
About the organisation
The School of Management and Governance (SMG) is a growing school that strives to hold a leading position in the field of business and social sciences and to do joint education and research with the technical schools of the University of Twente. The school focuses on management, governance, innovation, technology and entrepreneurship. In all these fields, the school provides bachelor, master and professional development programmes. In addition, scientific and applied research is carried out in various branches, such as health care, higher education, banking, and services business. Research is accommodated within the university research institutes: The Institute for Governance Studies (IGS), and the Centre for Telematics and Information Technology (CTIT). Within the SMG, the Department of Science, Technology, and Policy Studies (STePS) takes the assessment and governance of innovations and emerging technologies as its central theme of teaching and research.
