Sustainability and sustainable development have been high on political agendas across the world since the Brundlandt Commission Report, Our Common Future, was published in 1987. The strive towards sustainability brings all kind of ethical issues that need to be considered in development of green technologies – the use of persuasive technologies to trigger environmental-friendly behaviour is a good example. But to what extent can technology influence or steer people? What societal costs are we willing to pay for the sake of future generations? Researchers at 4TU.Ethics closely cooperate with engineers, studying how technology affects social values, such as sustainability, and individual values such as autonomy or privacy.

Behnam Taebi: energy ethics, responsible innovation, nuclear ethics, shale gas , social controversies, assessment methods, large (renewable) energy systems.
 
Andreas Spahn: behaviour change & persuasive technology for energy saving, political philosophy, environmental ethics, ethical aspects of energy technologies.
 
Neelke Doorn: water – governance, equity, sustainability. Involved in H2020 proposal on water and resilience.
 
Philip Brey: sustainable technologies; consumer aspect of technologies; changes in consumptions and relations between the good life and changes in consumption patterns related to sustainability.
 
Nicole Huijts: background in social psychology; worked on acceptance of carbon storage technologies.
 
Udo Pesch: role of the public in sustainable energy transitions; CCS, shale gas, social controversies, assessment methods, large (renewable) energy systems.
 
Gunter Bombaerts: Belgian nuclear research centre, ethics related to nuclear waste; actor-network theory; interplay of science and democratic decision-making.
 
Auke Pols: MVI – ethical aspects of biofuels; global responsibility; technological mindset; degrowth.
 
Ibo van den Poel: design for sustainability; new technologies as social experiments; biofuels.
 
Taylor Stone: sustainability, lighting; philosophy of architecture.
 
Robert-Jan Geerts: energy practices, energy consumption and well-being, energy transition, sustainability, environmental ethics and technology, anthropocene, climate ethics.
 
Elizabeth O’Neill : impact evaluation of social policies; measuring sustainability; sustainability in the developing world.
