Up till now, the area ”science and society” has been dominated by the sociology of scientific knowledge approach, whereas classical theory of science has focused on conceptual analysis and the rationale of scientific development. However, with this position, focus on philosophical analysis of science and society is expected to be at the centre. Hence, the position of Professor of Philosophy is focused on developing philosophical knowledge and the understanding of science, while at the same time linking this to how its internal logic may be manifested – or stopped from being manifested – in society. Examples of issues of relevance in this context are: What possibilities do science, including its methods for critical analysis and its search for truth, have in the context of society? What limitations exist as regards its claims, and for its usefulness outside this field, in areas such as education, the building of community planning, as well as for technological and medical development? What is the relation between norms of rationality and ethical/political norms?
