Paweł L. Bernat (1977) is a Post Doctoral researcher at the Department of Technology Management at the Eindhoven University of Technology.
He holds a BA in philosophy and mathematics (2001), and an MA in philosophy of mathematics from the Interlantionale Akademie für Philosophie, Liechtenstein (2002), where he also defended his Ph.D. thesis entitled “Technology and a Framework for Ethics: New Moral Situations and New Technologies” (2005). The dissertation, written under the supervision of Prof. Peter J. McCormick, analyzes the influence of (new) technologies on human morality and ethics. This idea of technology driven alterations of the moral/ethical frameworks pushed him to explore non-Western contemporary ethics in order to verify the above in a realm of other moral traditions. He went to Scotland to study Islamic ethics and meta-ethics, where he acquired an MLitt in Arabic and Islamic studies from the University of Aberdeen (2006).
At the TU/e he participates in a project aiming at developing an adequate ethics for future energy systems with an emphasis on the solar energy technologies. Such a sustainable ethics is meant to be a conceptual and normative tool assisting in evaluation of sustainable energy systems.
