Dr.Sand, M. (Martin)

I work as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie-Fellow with a project on „Moral Luck in Science and Innovation“ at the Department of Values, Technology and Innovation at TU Delft. Before, I studied „European Culture and History of Ideas“ at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), focussing on themes in philosophy and ethics of technology. My phD research was conducted at the Institute of Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS) and completed in 2018 with a thesis on „Futures, Visions, and Responsibility-An Ethics of Innovation“. This thesis was supervised by Prof. dr. Armin Grunwald (KIT) and Prof. dr. Ibo van de Poel (TU Delft). I am a co-editor of the Springer-Series „Futures of Technology in Science and Society“. During my phD, I taught business ethics and engineering ethics at the Technical University Kaiserslautern and Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University, Karlsruhe.

I am interested in questions of responsibility in science and technology. What does „responsibility“ mean, what are the conditions for being responsible and are there differences between being and being held responsible? Does luck undermine responsibility? I am also interested in normative ethics, especially virtue ethics and consequentialism. Furthermore, I am interested in prospective knowledge, predictability and the role of imagination and creativity.
