The Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management contributes to sustainable solutions for technical challenges in society by combining the insights from engineering with the humanities and the social sciences.
The Department of Values, Technology and Innovation (VTI) focuses on the value dimension of comprehensive engineering, the overarching research theme of the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management (TPM). It uniquely comprises philosophers, economists and risk scholars. It studies how to develop and diffuse responsible technological innovations that reflect deeply held social and moral values. The department is one of the largest groups in the world studying value aspects, economics and risks for a wide range of sociotechnical systems. The department plays a leading role nationally and internationally in research in responsible innovation and design for values.
The Ethics and Philosophy of Technology section is one of three sections within the VTI Department. The section plays a central role worldwide in research on ethics and philosophy of technology. The section participates in the 4TU.Centre for Ethics and Technology, a world-leading centre in the ethics of technology. The research of the section covers a broad spectrum, ranging from applied research in collaboration with engineering scholars, experimental and empirical ethics in collaboration with social scientists, and foundational research in meta-ethics, risk theory, methodology, ontology and philosophy of science, technology and design. The ethics research program focuses specifically on design for values, risk ethics, and responsible innovation.
The Ethics and Philosophy of Technology section provides for service teaching at all engineering programs of TU Delft, primarily in ethics but also in philosophy of engineering methodology and philosophy of science. We develop and provide our teaching in close collaboration with (assistant/associate) professors in engineering, to provide for tailor-made education that connects well with the focus of the different engineering programs. We are currently redesigning our teaching activities to provide more thematic ethics courses that are open to students from a variety of engineering programs. The Ethics and Philosophy of Technology section is looking for an Assistant Professor (tenure track) of Ethics and Philosophy of Technology with a strong passion for teaching. The position will consist for ca 60% of teaching and education development, 20% of research, and 20% management. The main focus of this position is on education, and the research and management will be primarily related to education. The candidate will contribute to and has proven skills in teaching and coaching Bachelor and Master students. The candidate is well equipped for managerial tasks. The candidate is prepared to work in a multidisciplinary environment encompassing engineering sciences, economics, safety science, social and behavioural science, and public policy.
We are looking for applicants with the following qualifications:
- PhD degree in the field of ethics and a specialization in ethics of technology or related fields in applied ethics. Candidates who also have teaching and/or research experience in critical thinking/engineering methodology are especially urged to apply.
- Relevant teaching experience;
- Strong commitment to teaching ethics of technology to engineering students and to contributing to the innovation as well as management of education;
- Possession of UTQ degree (university teaching qualification) or willingness to obtain this degree;
- Excellent English skills;
- Proficiency of Dutch or willingness to acquire it;
- Experience with online education or willingness to acquire it;
- Flexibility and readiness to work in teams.
Next to these requirements, expertise in the following areas would be favourable:
- Expertise in non-Western approaches to ethics
- Expertise in another relevant discipline (engineering, natural or social sciences etc)

Conditions of employment
At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, department leader and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.
