On Monday 15th April 2019 the first workshop for members of the university research ethics committees that review Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics [STEM] related human research (i.e. research involving human subjects or participants) will take place. Besides medical ethics committees and ethics committees for social and behavioural sciences, Dutch universities have also recognised the need for ethics review of human research conducted for the STEM fields.
This workshop brings members of these committees and other interested people together to share experiences and discuss shared concerns. The morning will focus on how the committees are organised. Committees of the various universities are asked to present themselves by discussing how they would address a common case study, and also to present a case that has been discussed at their own committee to highlight their own issues and solutions.
The afternoon will focus on lessons learned by others. The following three speakers have confirmed their contribution to afternoon session: Iris Muis (Utrecht Data school), will talk about their ethical data assistant tool; prof. Christian Olivers (VU) as chair of the national ethics council for Social and behavioural science will share his experiences, while prof. Martine C. de Vries (LUMC) will talk about WMO-related research with new technologies.
