Section of Philosophy and Ethics of Technology

The section of Philosophy and Ethics of Technology is embedded in the sub-department of Innovation Studies at Eindhoven. It has two foci: (i) ethics and technology and (ii) the philosophy of science and technology.

Its educational mission is (i) to contribute to the bachelor and master programs of the Department of Technology Management and (ii) to contribute to a reflective attitude of engineering students in all engineering disciplines at TU/e, with regard to the development and use of technology.

Research is embedded in three ways: (a) in the sub-department of Innovation Sciences; (b) in the joint research program with the philosophy group at TU Delft; and (3) in the 3TU.Centre for Ethics and Technology (which is a cooperation between the universities of Eindhoven, Delft and Twente.

Currently about 15 people work at the section of Philosophy, including postdocs and PhD students. The section has an international orientation.

Job description

The associate professor is responsible for one of the two foci of the philosophy section: education and research in ethics and technology. Teaching (up to 50%) involves compulsory and optional courses in engineering ethics, in fields such as innovation sciences, architecture, chemistry, and industrial engineering. Research (40%) should fit the themes developed at the 3TU Centre for Ethics and Technology and the profile of the Eindhoven philosophy section (see above). The associate professor will become a member of the Netherlands Research School for Practical Philosophy. He or she will be responsible for PhD and postdoc supervision and for the external funding of research projects. Management will be part of the job. The associate professor will also become a member of the management team of the 3TU.Centre for Ethics and Technology.

Qualifications and offer

  • PhD in philosophy and proven interest or degree in science and/or engineering. Areas of specialization should include applied ethics and meta-ethics
  • Outstanding teaching skills, shown by course evaluations
  • Excellent research skills in philosophy, as shown by previous publications in international journals
  • International experience in teaching or research
  • Ability to function on a senior level, or the potential to do so within 3 years. This includes being responsible for all the teaching and research in the field of ethics and technology of the section of Philosophy; to motivate staff to work at the best of their abilities; and to participate in the management team of the 3TU Centre for Ethics and Technology
  • Proven ability and motivation to submit research projects to external funding agencies
  • Ability to supervise PhD students and postdocs
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment and to build bridges between disciplines, especially with the sub-department of Innovation Sciences
  • Sufficient knowledge of the English language. Knowledge of Dutch is not initially required. Assessment of English speaking/writing skills is obligatory for all TU/e educational staff. Master programs are taught in English

We offer

  • 1,0 fte appointment for a period of 5 years. Based on achievements and available funding, a permanent position is possible.
  • An associate professorship, or a tenure track to an associate professorship within 3 years, depending on current qualifications
  • Salary and benefits in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities. Yearly salary between 59.000 and 79.000 euro
